Deaf Cruise Best of Europe August 31 - September 8, 2008
Since Amsterdam is an exciting city, most of us arrived a few days earlier. After visiting some of the well
known sights in the Dutch city, we embarked the Century. Our first port of call was Zeebrugge in Belgium where we visited
Flemish Art Jewels Ghent and Bruges. Those medieval cities are very well preserved. We stepped back in time as we joined our
guide for a walking tour through the narrow, twisting, cobbled streets passing picturesque scenes of ancient buildings,
tree-lined canals and gabled facades.

Arriving in France, we stepped off the ship in Cherbourg. Some of us went to the Beaches of Normandy. The others
drove through the Normandy countryside to visit Balleroy castle that was built in the XVII century. The chateau is now owned by
the Malcolm Forbes family, the American publisher and aeronaut, who purchased it in 1970. |
Vigo is a Spanish port at the North West Atlantic coast and the largest city in Galicia. The adventurous
part of our group had a rafting tour booked. The other part went on a tour to Pontevedra and Combarro. The tour provided us with
a taste of the Galician culture - in both urban and rural surroundings. |

Our port of call in Portugal was Lisbon where we joined a bus tour to Sintra and Cascais. On our way
to Sintra, we stopped at the most westerly point of the European mainland, Cape Roca. One of Portugal's oldest towns, Sintra is
considered one of the most beautiful places in Portugal. It was once the summer residence of early Portuguese kings and aristocrats.
Heading back to Lisbon, we had the opportunity to visit Jeronimos Monastery Church, a 16th century architectural masterpiece
designed in Gothic Manueline style. |

Our last port of call, Tangier, was for most of us the first visit at the African continent. We left Tangier by
bus and headed to Tetouan. Tetouan has the charm of all small northern Moroccan towns and situated among the giant mountains of
the RIF. We participated in a comprehensive tour as our guide offered insights into the history and diverse culture of the city.
We Explore the Medina and Souks and saw the Royal Palace. An interesting visit at the Bab Akla School was included in the tour
where we learned some interesting facts the about arts and crafts of Morocco. |
